Global First Year welcomes 85 new students!
Here at Global FIU, we just wrapped up a whirlwind orientation week which welcomed 85 new students to the Global First Year program at FIU!
16 countries are represented by this new cohort with Saudi Arabia leading the group with 31 students! For many of them, this is their first time in the United States, while others had visited or studied English here before. Most students will be living on-campus with other FIU students, though some are staying with family here in Miami.
Global First Year greeters met many of the students at the airport to welcome them to Miami and to bring them to their new home! Students moved into the dorms before the start of orientation activities and they all seemed quite pleased with their new digs! Global First Year team members escorted students to their new rooms and presented each of them with a move-in bag filled with bedding, room necessities and a few goodies, of course! Most students were tired and quite jetlagged, but the eventful day was capped off with a welcome pizza party none the less!
No rest for the weary – the day after move in, students began a busy few days of activities such as document collection, two placement exams (Math & English) and presentations on health, dining, academics, student life, public safety and technology.
It wasn’t all business though, some fun highlights included: campus tours, meals together and bonding with new friends over games and icebreakers.
“Everyone is so nice and it’s really great that we are going to learn about people and cultures around the world from each other!” said Farah Refaat, a new student from Egypt.
The Global First Year team is definitely excited and can’t wait to see how the spring semester unfolds with our new students AND returning students!
